FTSFEST20 SUPPORTS TIMEPLEDGE.ORG
This year the 1st day of the FinTechStage Festival has a price tag attached to it, why’s that?
If you’re reading this, you are most likely aware that the previous FinTechStage Festival editions have been free to attend, in line with our efforts to bring together the Italian FinTech ecosystem in its entirety. This year, that is set to change.
Last November, we rolled out a social enterprise called TimePledge.org, or TPO for short, with missions in Nairobi, Kenya and Kampala, Uganda. The entirety of the ticket fees we are introducing for the 2020 Festival will go directly towards logistical support of this initiative.
TPO is a global program supporting African entrepreneurs in several domains of their businesses, from product to strategy to channels management to investors pitching. TPO matches international experts, who pledge their time, with local entrepreneurs as a means to create a self-sustaining platform enabling 10K entrepreneurs in Africa.
Across the continent, fintech isn’t so much disrupting traditional financial services as much as building up a historically underdeveloped industry. By creating a raft of tech-based products and solutions, including mobile money, online payment processing, lending, and investing, these startups are filling large gaps that exist in local financial service industries. Africa is home to the largest share of the world’s unbanked and underbanked population and this segment is perfectly poised to be served by FinTech.
But not necessarily any FinTech. The best way to tackle local problems is with local solutions that ingeniously take context into account. That is why our goal is to empower local entrepreneurs!
In the upcoming five months, we have a series of missions to assist entrepreneurs in different locations: On February 14th and 15th we’ll be in Maputo, Mozambique guiding entrepreneurs on how to pitch their startup; At the end of March, we’ll travel to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire and engage with the ecosystem; Between the 2nd and 5th of April, we will be running a mission in parallel to the Lagos Blockchain Week, in Nigeria, where we’ll be back again in May; and later in April we will bring TPO to Jordan and Senegal, respectively. The only way we can make these missions successful is through your constant support and the time pledged by our mentors.
